The whiner

I had a grumbling student in my classroom the other day. He was complaining about everything he possibly could…and when he finally exhausted his list, then thought of a few more things, just too completely annoy me. I finally looked at this boy and said,

“Well, Joey. I certainly hope you don’t drown in your pool of self-pity.”

The brilliance of this statement caught me, and I started to laugh. I grabbed a sticky note and wrote this down as he watched me, undoubtedly wondering just why I was writing it down at all (amidst a few well-deserved chuckles). I quickly explained, “That was really good. Quite the zinger there, you know.”

He just stared.

I have a feeling he had no idea what it meant. Ah well, no matter. I did, and it was enough to make me smile. It almost made his complaining worth it.

Almost.

  1. That's a good one! May I use that line on my kids?

  2. That was great and I am stealing that when someone in my family starts whining.

  3. Nice! If you don't mind me stealing that, I'll have to use it on All-a-boy. Most people don't know his "woe-is-me" side, but boy can he pout!

  4. That is Brilliance! I would say I was going to steal it, but if your students don't get it, mine certainly won't!

  5. Nettle - You have permission...and you don't even need to cite the source.

Kris - It is fun to say, I'll have to admit.

Gerb - I have seen that portion of your fourth born on occasion, however, I am sure that he saves most of it for his family members.

Jewels - Yeah, I don't think they'd quite get it...I think only my GT kids would probably get it too...
