Den Storytelling

This past week I was invited to be the ‘featured storyteller’ at a cub scout pack meeting by a friend of mine who’s a den mom. To be honest, I didn’t expect it to be more than perhaps half-a-dozen boys jammed into a small room…several of which who attend my old school.

I was assured that I would know many of them, so I agreed to this little venture.

Well, it turned out to be a pack or two, some Webelos, and their families as well.

I won’t lie and say that I wasn’t nervous, because I was.

When it came my turn to stand before these people, I decided to treat them just as if they were a class of fifth graders.

As I started the story the room became silent instantly, and remained that way for the entire fifteen minutes I’d been given. As I looked out on the faces in the crowd, I saw three past students from years gone by. They all were smiling…they had known what a story from ‘Mr. Z’ was really going to be like.

I am so glad that somewhere along the line, I learned to do voices for the books I read and the stories I tell. It makes the biggest difference in the world.

  2. I bet it was fun for all! You know, Jake still does voices when he reads to his younger brother and sister --just like you taught him.

  3. There is absolutely nothing that compares to a read aloud by Mr. Z.

  4. I can't tell you how sad All-a-boy was to know he was missing a story from Mr. Z at Pack Meeting to go on his first 3 day hunting/camping trip! He actually debated staying home. You've got some kind of power over my kids. How do you do it?!

  5. Fun! Fun! Fun! A fun book to read aloud and do a funny voice with is Leonardo the Terrible Monster by Mo Willems. Have you read it?

  7. I have never heard anyone read a story the way you do! I bet those kids will always remember the story told by Mr. Z!
    What lucky kids!

  8. Uncle D - It was fun. I'm glad I ended up going.

Cari - That makes me feel good inside. I always loved his version of, "Psss, it's Me...the Boogeyman." In fact, I still play the recording I did of him reading it to my students.

    T - It's fun for me too...

Gerb - Ah well, he might be hearing a lot of stories starting next year. As for the power...not sure, maybe it has to do with bribery.

Bee - I haven't. I'll have to check it out.

Jewels - Speaking of stories...I miss buddy classes.

KJ - The grown-ups were even more attentive than the kids. It was a riot!
