I Heed the Call

The rain falling in cyclonic waves beat against the corrugated tin roofing. It hits the pavement making that popping and sizzling sound—much like when someone is frying bacon. From the twisting cloudy heavens, streaks of lightning illuminate the clouds…like spidery handwriting as the light makes its way to the ground. A second later a screaming boom reverberates, something akin to an exploding velociraptor; the noise fills the skies and empty spaces between the buildings.

The heavy scent of moisture permeates the very air, and fills my lungs with sweetness. I drink it in like warm broth.

The skies are calling…they beckon me to slip out into its downpour.

I heed the call.

  4. velociraptor-you made me pull out the dictionary today. It was quite dusty and hidden away. Naah, I just used iMac's dictionary. Nonetheless, you taught me something today.

Now, if i can only use it in everyday conversation so I sound smart. Today I saw a velciraptor running by. Hmm?

I'll just wait until we have a storm and use it the same way you did just to be safe.

  5. This has been a blissful day, hasn't it? I could do without the humidity, but those blasts of light and ground-shaking thunder followed by sporadic downpours have been doing my soul some good since they started at around 5 this morning.

  6. You're not supposed to go outside when there is lightning - it's attracted to awesomeness.

  8. The rain teased us all evening long. We heard the thunder, the flashes of lightning and smelled the rush of moisture. I would have loved to have been invited to dance in the downpour. But it moved away from us.

  12. LOL at Natalie's comment!

That makes several of us that heeded the call. When we were done, The Native's came in completely drenched, the steam rising off of their warm bodies, and huge grins on their dirty faces.

  14. I love rain. We had one of those storms last night. Unfortunately it was like 1:30am and no-one wanted to come play. So I laid there and listened.

  16. I live in Lehi. That storm last night was spectacular! My wife and I stood on our porch and watched the lightning and rain.

    Better than most TV shows.

  18. Got back in town last night to catch the show! Me likey the summer thunder/lightening storms, although the poor bride whose wedding we attended was NOT so thrilled.

  19. Dude, you must have gotten a gentler version of that storm. Cause we had the hugest hail I've ever seen in Utah and the lightning was so close around my house that I thought we were being stuck several times. I even wonderered for a few minuets if there was a tornado coming and if I should rush my kids to the basement! I usually love standing in a summer storm, but not this last one!

  20. p.s. Yanet must not have seen Jurassic Park. I had velociraptor nightmares for months after that movie!

  21. Do you really go out in the rain? Interesting.

I take it as a sign direct from God that I should take a nap.

  22. Oooh - a thunderstorm! Is there something wrong with me if I like the smell of rain on pavement? Oh well, I'm just so jealous you got a thunderstorm.
