SCENE 1, EXTERIOR. AFTERNOON, PLAYGROUND. The teacher is on recess duty and is supervising the fifth and sixth graders as they play wall ball, kickball, and the other various games taking place. As he is walking along the blacktop, a fifth-grade boy approaches him.
JOEY: Mr. Z, guess what?
TEACHER: You got beat up by a bunch of kindergarten girls again?
JOEY: Yeah, that too; but this is something else.
TEACHER: Fire away.
[The boy looks around to make sure that he isn’t being overheard, and then leans in close].
JOEY: I swallowed a dime last week.
TEACHER: Oh. So, were you trying to...change?
[The teacher starts to laugh; the boy ignores him and continues].
JOEY: I was just throwing it up in the air and catching it in my mouth when GULP! Down it went!
TEACHER: Bummer, now you’re ten cents poorer than you were before.
JOEY: Well, you know I can always look for it when it comes out later.
[Pause].
TEACHER: Okay, now that’s just gross, Joey.
JOEY: But you know what, Mr. Z? I hope it never comes out, that way I’ll always be worth ten cents!
TEACHER: You know what, Joey? You’re worth a heck of a lot more than ten cents…
[Fade to black].

Love your quick responses, but don't they have to watch for it to 'come out' just in case it 'clogs the interal plumbing'?
I know it's the worried mother in me.....
"Worth much more"? he's priceless! and so's his teacher...
Hah! That's one funny Joey! I bet you are going to miss him. Hope you get a good replacements for next year!
Priceless!
The ten cents is funny - but the way he blew off your 'beat up by kindergarten girls' comment rules!
HAhahah! So, you were trying to... change? So punny, that Mr. Z.
He should have swallowed a Susan B. Anthony.
I love this one.
He is worth his weight in gold...and then some.
Anybody notice the new Spanish translation option when you mouse over "the dime?" - curious dual meaning.
He is so cute.
And you are so kind to him. I'd smile if a teacher would talk to me like that, at his age.
Nice job.
I love that Joey. What are we going to do all summer long?
Natalie said it! Not worth ten cents..priceless..
Now you have me imagining joey sifting through his doodoo to find his lost dime.
OOOOOOOH! Icky pooo! Literally.
This reminds me of an absolutely wonderful story (true) about my husband's grandfather. There is a tiny, carefully preserved one room cabin on our land that he built many many years ago for his bride and family to be. When he hammered the boards together, he nailed the crossjamb to the door in with a penny, saying as long as that cabin stood, they'd never be broke.
It just reminded me.
This kid is a kick in the pants. Now that school is out I find myself missing having him in class. I guess it's a good thing that I have several 'moments' in the 'yet to be posted' file on my computer...
You can always borrow Mr. M. Yesterday morning he woke up with red teary eyes. He said, "I dreamed about Miss Roger's and then I woke up and started crying. I miss her so bad!" :D
Wow, you are witty. I'm envious. I usually think of the funny/appropriate/silly/snappy comebacks a day or two later.
Gosh, "I hate those days when I only feel like ten cents" is gonna be my new phrase when I have a bad day...
I'm pretty sure I'm done commenting now. We'll see..........
