Moments with Joey – Music Time on Friday

SCENE 1, INTERIOR. AFTERNOON, CLASSROOM. The teacher is sitting on the old, wooden chair in front of his class with his father’s guitar in hand. The students are seated on the floor gripping the weathered songbooks as they sing together on a Friday afternoon. After a few songs to warm up, the teacher allows the table captains to each pick a song. The class sings “Bad Moon Rising,” “The Cat Came Back,” and group of boys start to belt out an a-capella version of “Going to the Zoo” finally dissolving into a fit of laughter and giggles. As the teacher calls on one of the table captains, the boy gives an enthusiastic grin as he shuts his songbook and sits up proudly.

JOEY: I’d like to sing “Baby, Baby” please, Mr. Z.

TEACHER: Baby, Baby?

JOEY: Yeah…you know, by Justin Bieber.

TEACHER: I don’t think that you’d all know the words to that song, or that I’d know all the chords either; I think I could only play part of the song…

JOEY: Oh, trust me, Mr. Z. I know all the words!

[A ripple of excitement spreads through the class and the teacher quietly slips an mp3 recorder from his pocket and hits the ‘record’ button].

[Fade to black].

How fun! Mr. Z, you're quite the guitar player, and to know the Justin Beiber song...well, let's just say, I'm impressed!

If there was ever a case for homeschooling, I think I've found it!
I have to admit, they were pretty good. No wonder they all love you.

Richard said, "Isn't that some form of child abuse?" ;)

That. Was. Awesome! And, kuddos to you because quite frankly, for the most part, they were on pretty dang good pitch. Obvious that singing isn't new to them. They did a great job! :D

"I don't know that I'd know all the chords..." Riiiiiiight. Like you didn't sit in your front room practicing that one until you had it down. Puh-leeeze!

LOL! I don't know if that is the coolest & funniest thing I have ever heard or the saddest. Still deciding.

OMG, they are GOOD!!.

The sentiment of oh em gee seems appropriate here. So so funny! They definitely knew the words, and it sounds like someone definitely knew the chords too... I'm just sayin'!

Oh baby, baby, oh baby, baby, oh! just shoot me. Can't believe you did this for them, but then you wouldn't be Mr.Z if you didn't.

Every good elementary teacher should know a good Bieber tune.
That was awesome!

That was awesome. The end cracked me up.

I'm surprised the boys didn't protest. We can't have any of the Bieber around our house.

Way to add some, uh, Canadian content to your curriculum.

that is so funny.
My grand daughters know that song off by heart...and they are 3 and 6....
LOVE IT

( I could even sing a few bars)

That was awesome and funny. I asked my kids if they sang along. My daughter just giggled and started singing with me (I only know the chorus)... My son rolled his eyes and made up his own version of the song. (not bad actually). If you haven't heard his version you should get him to sing it for you.

That was awesome on the fly and everything! Impressive....or scary...

So much fun! If you're going to have to listed to Bieber - might as well do it in style...(and unision... sort of) LOL!

Clearly the school year needs to end with a video slide show of your pics with this as the background music. It's wonderful!

Fabulous fun for the kids! They'll take that with them forever.

Priceless. That makes me want to learn the guitar. Although, that may not happen at all, and definitely won't happen until after I've run a marathon. Or at least a few half marathons. Still, a girl can dream!

So cute. Even if it is a Bieber song.

And that's some classy guitar playing!

hahaha...

but I still think I prefer The Cat Came Back (seriously I remember that one from my own elementary days - my poor kids were forced to learn it... they'll forgive me as long as I don't sing "Senor Don Gato was a cat" anymore)

I have to admit I teared up a bit when I listened to this...in a good way, not in a "Wow those kids can't sing!" way. It's moments like that that make me miss teaching full time and makes me miss you!

I am amazed at your impromptu performance!

The Bieber better watch out.

That made me smile a lot, and it almost made me miss being in the classroom (almost). Maternity leave is pretty awesome!

Everyone already said it, but here it goes again, because it just wouldn't be right to read that and listen to it and NOT comment.

I love, so very much, that your class has such a great experience with you every week. That is all sorts of wonderful.

This post had my little guys singing all weekend! Love your creativity in the classroom.

I like this version WAY more than any one where Beiber sings!

And isn't it crazy how you become so relateable when you know something that the kids are interested in!

Wonderful teacher moment!
