Life Session

“If you carry your childhood with you, you never become older.”
—Tom Stoppard

There is something to be said of children; of their ability to laugh, to smile, and to simply be. This past Saturday, when the November snows began to fall from the heavens and the beleaguered winds found themselves chasing the last few scattered leaves down empty streets, I found myself sheltered behind the lens of my camera—the place I love to be.

I had the opportunity to capture moment in time; a Life Session of one wonderful—and unforgettable—little boy.

May you enjoy viewing these images as much as I did while capturing them.

Be still my heart!

I wasn't expecting to find pictures of my special little friend today. What an amazing little person he is, and you have captured some amazing pictures of him.

A lot of these photos won't have the same meaning to other people as they do to me...the balloon, the keys, facial expressions....but they all make up my boy and like Gerb said on her post today on 4P's there are certain things I wish I could keep reliving and you've helped me do just that. Certain images of Levi I want to hold next to me because they are near and dear to my heart and you did it! Thank you....two stupid words that do not hold the amount of feeling that I feel....but I don't know how else to express.....

What great shots of an adorable kid! I love the shots by the window, the one of he with his mom... but especially the one where he's peeking through the blanket. Awesome work.

Thank you for capturing in photos the side of Levi we see every day but have not been able to capture. All of our other children are so photogenic, but we've struggled to get photos of Levi that don't say "handicapped". I wish I could explain it or understand it, but we really don't see the handicap very often except in photos. Rachel and I would look at photos of him and ask if that was what everyone else saw. They looked like photos of someone else. Thank you for achieving our perspective in photos we can treasure forever.

I am this little boy's Auntie and can I just say that these photos are beautiful. You have no idea the blessing you have brought to his mother through these photos. Thank you for capturing his spirit.

So much depends on - how did Williams put it? A red wagon with white chickens in the rain. We live lives made of tiny details - a look around the eyes, the fall of light just so on the rug in the afternoon - the way color pierces shadow, or the way a child looks when he rides away from you on his bike. We record the remarkable, the significant moment: celebrations, changes, seams between what was and what will be - and we write these things in journals - the peaks of joy, the nadirs in sorrow.

But most of the life we lead is in the in-between. The passing tones. The things we never remember to write about. To record. And there, later, is where the heart breaks. Over the thing we see no more, and have no piece of later.

When I looked at these photographs, I sat back in my chair and blinked. The technique is beautiful. Even elegant. But the eye to see? How did you get behind Brian and Rachel's eyes, to see as they see? How did you know? Because you did. You do. And you made me weep.

By the way - here's a secret about those keys. Those particular ones: I had to replace a set of keys I'd given to Rachel, because Levi had squirreled them away somewhere. When I was having the keys re-copied - I think it was the orem locksmith on State, I can't remember - I told him about Levi's passion for keys, and the man immediately turned and starting messing around under the counter. What he came up with was that ring of keys, which he solemnly handed me. "For Levi," he said.

There is a lot hidden here Kristen. The keys, the story behind the keys. The quilt and what is hidden in the quilting. The quilt that was made by me, quilted by Levi's auntie who quilted Lil' Bennie in the quilt.....the name Levi's grandpa gave him when he first saw him after he was born......the story behind Lil' Benny......the rope that pulls the wagon....I could go on.

T - Thanks, glad you liked them.

D - He is quite the little character, isn't he? Taking his life session was a lot of fun for me.

S - Thanks. I'd like to think that Mom and grandpa had something to do with the talent, you know?

R - No words are necessary.

N - He made it quite easy, to be honest...

G - He was quite accommodating, really...he didn't even worry that I was there taking photos.

B - I am glad that they are images you enjoyed and that 'captured' just a little bit of who he really is.

C - I had to narrow it down for a blog post, out of the however many were taken, these were a few of my favorites.

S - He has a wonderful family which brings out the best in him. That is where the real 'spirit' of the home is.

S - From one photog to another...thanks.

D - I will do so as long as I am able; but it always helps to have someone who is so photogenic as well.

B - It was short-lived, but it blasted from the sky when it came.

A - Not too often; however, if I do, I'll let you know.

K - Beautiful words. As for the photos, I saw what was truly there.

J - There were a few others I liked as well, but these were my personal favorites.

L - If you did know him, you'd love him; he is a great kid.

'Capture' is a fitting word to use in connection with these photographs. They contain within them priceless moments of a precious person, and they beckon us as viewers to still ourselves and let interwoven reminders of the simple wonder and solemn significance of life wrap around and warm us.
Thank you for sharing.
