Moments with Joey – Challenges

SCENE 1, INTERIOR. NOON, HALLWAY. The teacher and a fifth-grade boy exit the lunchroom and begin walking down the hall toward the classroom. After a minute, the teacher glances over at the strangely silent boy, remembering the boy’s reaction to the first few days of school.

TEACHER: Remember when you used to hate me?

[The boy says nothing at first, but gives a huge grin].

JOEY: Yeah, but I don’t hate you anymore.

TEACHER: Yeah, I know; I’m your favorite teacher…probably of all time...maybe forever, too. [Pause] I’m pretty awesome, actually.

JOEY: [The boy thinks for a second with a furrowed brow]. But doesn’t everybody hate you at first, Mr. Z?

[The teacher puts on a haughty look and nods].

TEACHER: Yeah. After all, if everybody already loved me, it would be far too easy. Where would the challenge be then?

[The boy shrugs].

TEACHER: In fact, you should probably be worshipping the ground I walk on.

[Pause].

JOEY: Like everybody else?

TEACHER: Yep.

JOEY: That must be some valuable ground, Mr. Z.

TEACHER: You have no idea.

Fade to black.

Cute story!

Just wanted you to know that you've inspired me to go on a home visit tomorrow night. See how your blog is changing people...one at a time.

Great story, but if the teacher is you, I can't believe that you don't start each year beloved.

I'm getting a mental image of Joey in my head. Like when you read a book and you imagine what the characters look like.

When my Dad taught high school he was one of the most beloved teachers out of the entire school. I couldn't figure it out. How could anyone stand to tolerate him? I sure couldn't.... Of course I was a teenage girl....and at the time he was my nemesis.

I'm sure your one awesome teacher! Coincidentally I had a fifth grader last year....and one coming up next year. Plus my baby will be in first....finally the freedom I've been waiting for.

So what do I do with my new found freedom....volunteer, PTA etc. I wouldn't have it any other way :)

As usual, I love it. What a team you two are.

They probably all despise you in the beginning because you have more armpit hairs then they do...of course, it doesn't take long for the Joey(s) of your realm to realize...you're just a big Joey yourself!

*My daughter is always proclaiming herself as awesome too...is there some secret society I don't know about?*

I think Joey, is speechless now! lol... Nothing like a teacher who has an answer for everything- reminds me of my mom!.

Being the god of the elementary school must be a daunting task! You and Joey = quite a team.

I can hardly wait for the new school year - yours, not mine - and new Joey stories...

I can remember one, and only one teacher that didn't scare me to death. Teachers terrified me. All adults actually. But I had one in high school that was so kind to me. Boy did I spend the year having a major crush on him! :D

Haha... nice.
Being a parent is just the opposite. They start off adoring you then eventually start to hate you.

Or so I'm told. Not that any of MY children have ever said that to me... *cough*.... never....

Yes, I am jealous. :D

I'm sure the hate part only lasted a short time.

Haha. Now, if I could just get me kids to worship the ground I walk on....I think that comes later...like 20 years later. Love these Joey moments.
