Moments with Joey – Annoying AND Distracting

SCENE 1, INTERIOR. LATE AFTERNOON, CLASSROOM. The teacher is working with two students who’ve stayed after school to complete homework assignments. Becky is using a set of colored pencils to finish up her vocabulary poster. As she colors, she pauses to shake her hand as it’s become ‘tired.’ After a few moments, the boy looks up from his spelling assignment and fixes her with a look.

JOEY: Would you please quit doing that? It’s annoying AND distracting.

[Becky pauses for a moment and then starts up again].

BECKY: I could, but my hand is tired and this helps it to feel better.

[The boy rolls his eyes and turns in his desk so as not to have her in his sights as he continues on his homework. In a few moments, Becky has finished. She gathers up her books and leaves for the day. Joey and the teacher sit in silence for a few moments when Joey starts to flap both of his hands; the teacher ignores this at first, but then it becomes quite annoying AND distracting].

TEACHER: Joey, just what are you doing? You look like the winner of a Miss America Pageant.

[The boy lets loose a giggle as he flaps his hands even harder].

JOEY: It looks like I’m drying my nails, doesn’t it?

TEACHER: Actually, you look like some type of freaky cheerleader.

[The boy continues to flap both of his hands].

TEACHER: Joey, I thought you said that that was annoying.

JOEY: It is. [Pause]. But I never knew just how fun it was before.

TEACHER: Even if it’s annoying for everybody else?

JOEY: No, because it is…

Fade to black.

I must say that these Joey moments seem more like great parenting stories! What parent hasn't had their child do this? OY! Great story!

Yeah. I'm pretty sure my son was in your class this week.

Are you sure 'Joey' isn't one of my boys? Especially the oldest? This is so something he would do.

I suspect he will be a teacher someday, of a 5th grade class.

This Joey moment also applies to shaking glue bottles. I know this from experience.

I love me some Joey stories!

My Joey got to "rap" his answers in science class today.

Should I refer to him as DJ Jazzy Joe now?

It's not annoying AND distracting when I do it!

I like the new header. Not the Joey I pictured in my mind but cute nonetheless.

LOL, awesome. I think the things you say are just as entertaining as Joey!

Joey sounds like a few of my brothers, it's only fun if it annoys those around you!

I found you through Cheeseboy! We need more awesome blogging dudes so thanks for contributing your awesomeness!

LOL... I have seen a few moments like this over the past 2 weeks. Those 5th graders are so much fun.

I love that he waited till she left to try out the new technique. Those 5th grade boys are fast learners ... at annoying and distracting.

Joey just proved a theory that I have had for some time now.

When Splenda says to stop doing something because it's annoying. He waits and does the EXACT same thing as soon as I am out of the room.

I KNEW it!
