Media of the Week - Meanness

There are times when we encounter those who, because of the anonymity of the Internet, feel it an ample opportunity to make comments that they’d otherwise never utter aloud.

Well, I guess some people would, just because that’s the type of people that they are.

In the realms of mediums such as YouTube and Blogger, contributors to these sites often find themselves at the ridicule of others who—as said before—seem to have no filtering system.

It always surprises me that there are those out there who continually return to blogs to leave derogative comments, or watch YouTube videos simply in order to mock the person who made them. It seems to me that a pretty common rule of thumb would be, “If you don’t agree with or don’t like it, don’t watch it/read it.”

And most certainly…don’t come back.

Yet these people seem to keep returning. Perhaps they find a thrill in saying things about others—hiding behind their cloak of anonymity. Heaven only knows.

I received a hater comment not that long ago. All I can say about this individual is they were pretty vindictive and cruel. The things they said were mercilessly unkind and callous. Though I took it all with a grain of salt, I was amazed at some of the things this person had said while hiding behind the mask of ‘anonymous.’

I wanted to embed the video for this week’s clip; however, this option has been disabled by YouTube. You’ll need to go to the site in order to watch it.

It’s a thinker.

It happens all too often and as you say, it's a cop out. Would these people have the guts to say these things to the persons face that they are tearing down?

So sorry you got such a nasty comment. I'd make a joke about it but truthfully it's not a joking matter. Being unkind in any form isn't a joke.

That's totally heart breaking!

I just don't understand why or how people can be so mean! I think they sometimes do it out of jealousy, though. They wish they were like the person they are mocking in one way or another, and since they don't think they can be like that person they try to degrade that person... so they won't feel so much less in comparison. Comparisons and criticisms both need to go!

Mean people on the internet are usually cowards. Sorry to hear about your commenter.

As far as your post, its a sad situation...So far I haven't had that happen but I can imagine it leaves a bad taste and feeling... The video is quite disturbing...I can't imagine someone leaving a bad comment here... Guess it adds up to those types being attention who*res...Best thing to do is delete the comment and not stoop to their level...which I know u wouldn't do...U're too smart..

Agree with everything each one has said. I totally believe that the knowledge of knowing they will never meet me/you in real life has given them a license to be a total a**hole. It happens, they're mean, but I am not letting their comments make me be like them.
Thanks for being who you are and not like them!

I get spam crap on mine...it's so ANNOYING! I have my account set up to add comments after I have approved them so I can see what comments are being left. And a lot of them are spam junk :o(

wow... the outcome of that video took me by surprise but unfortunately, it's a sad reality. :(

Cowards do such things out of their own inadequacy.

I didn't see where that video was going. Wow! I haven't really thought that much about negative commenters.

Sorry it happened to you. Who doesn't love those Joey stories? I can't even fathom that one!

You would think that if you are going have the "guts" to say something you would also have the "guts" to leave a name. I am totally with you. There are blogs out there that I disagree with and that I don't particularly like the language they use. So I simply avoid those blogs. Plain and simple.

Sorry about your nasty comment. And definitely what a thought provoking video. I remember meanness in comments being addressed on another blog I read- people feel free to say those things when they can be anonymous and it's very sad when that happens.

People like that are cowards. They are the sort who would never ever have the guts to say something vindictive in person. Instead they are usually passive-aggressive in their personal lives...which is still scary because that means instead of using their words they are being sneaky with their actions. Eitherway they are miserable and deserve to be that way.

Great blog you have here. I enjoyed reading a few of your posts.

poor kid, I want to defend him and respond to all the negative comments. People can be such douchebags.

I thought him reaching out and reading the comment was pretty cool.

Ignoring such people is the best thing to do. Though, that can sometimes be hard with so many hate comments. Sorry about the one you received.
I have seen many Youtube Videos with Hate comments. The worst part s there are many others who agree to the commentator and give him a "thumbs up".

That was really good.

I don't get why people leave hate comments. I'm sure a lot of it is jealousy. They're jealous of the creative/funny post, or of how popular a blogger is, but really, how stupid. Did we all forget the "do unto others" thing?

Sorry you had to deal with someone's unthoughtful action.

And I can't imagine anyone saying anything bad about you. Other than "His cookies are so good I gained 5 pounds and now I hate him"

Totally agree. Especially since I have gotten about 20 hate comments in this past week. Someone is maaaaaad at me!

If only I had finished out the computer programming series in college. Oh well, at least I learned how to program an imaginary coke machine. Valuable information. I really enjoyed this. Thanks!

I could not...in my wildest dreams...imagine anybody saying mean things to you, Mr. Z. You, my friend, are the salt of the earth. Obviously, that hater was just extremely jealous of how incredibly awesome you are - and the fact that they didn't even have the guts to admit to who they were...proves that they are spineless as well. Go forth and spread your magic Mr. Z - you do it ever so well!!

People who leave mean comments are sad, lonely, dried up and bitter. At least that's how I see it.

This is a great video to show to my kids though. Thanks for sharing it.
