Autumn Fire

As I drove home this evening, the gray clouds hung about the eastern mountains like the smoke around mount doom. My eyes traveled up the steep slopes to the fireworkian display gracing the mountainside. Like lava flowing from the volcanic depths, the bushes and trees near the top of the mountain emitted shades of deep maroon, rich amber, and pumpkin orange as they seemed to spread the changing of the seasons one to another, flowing down the mountain in a lava-ish landslide of rich, burnt color.

I felt the fresh air billow about me in shimmering folds as I cranked the stereo, and the strains of Jars of Clay wafted through the early evening air, breathing in the smells which spelled autumn.

Autumn is my favorite time of year. I can’t tell you just how much that I look forward to the onset of Halloween and Thanksgiving. I love fresh pumpkin pie, dressing in costumes, leaves falling in a myriad of rainbow showers, and crisp mornings that invigorate the lungs and mind.

There are times that I wish the season would last a few months instead of being so brief, but unfortunately it is not to be. It just makes me appreciate the time I have all the more.

The tinder has been set, and the tree outside my kitchen window has already begun to spark, the green in one small patch has turned to bright, sunny yellow. This is just a precursor to what is yet to come.

I look forward to the onslaught of autumn, and the entire forest igniting into flames.

Fall in New England really is as amazing as everyone says. I get giddy just thinking about it. Fabulous post!

I have to agree w/u... I love the change in color... I hope we get it this year.. Last year leaves fell in Jan.!. never changed to red, just yellowed and fell. I like Fall because it still can be a bit warm here in Cali., and also we get the winds...Love that upward shot of the mtn... the clouds look angry.

I have always loved fall. Even as a little kid. Being surrounded by so many evergreens I didn't see the blazing colors that I get to see now but the change in the air, the crispness, as you said, exhilerating!

Spring is supposed to be new beginnings but as a kid fall meant new beginnings. A new school year, new pencils with erasers, the kitchen smelling like fresh apple pie as mom canned jars upon jars of applesauce from our trees.

Now, fall to me is a time to sink into a chair, put up my feet, and sip hot cocoa, as vibrant leaves cascade around me with nary a care in the world...... figuratively speaking.

The canyon is on fire right now!! I hope you get a chance to hurry and bask in it. I know a certain someone who would take you deep into the fire on horseback if you wanted so you could capture it all on camera. Her blog is full right now of her recent trip up the canyon. Beautiful photos.

Fantastic photo, and what a great description! Autumn is magnificent.

BTW, my wife and I love the Alphabetography we recently ordered. Now we just need to find a suitable frame for it. Thanks!

I love fall in UT. The only problem is the winter that comes after it....which is why I live in AZ. Great photo.

I don't remember if I fell in love with fall before it became merged with my annual anniversary trip (in which we drive around and appreciate the foliage for days...) or before...

Me too, friend, me too, Fall is most definitely my favorite season!

Beautiful, sir.

The only thing that would have improved this post would have been U mountain instead of Y mountain, but I understand with where you live and everything.

Okay, in your words Fall seems kinda nice. I need to come back and read this daily while I am kicking and screaming my way out of summer.

This is postcard worthy. Imagine sending this picture when you are travelling. Nice!

What's the Y on the side of the mountain? Utah's answer to the Hollywood sign?

I'm totally with you on Fall. My anniversary is in November. We picked that month to marry b/c I love fall (and he said if we didn't get married in November, the deal is off). I also like that my fall decorations can stretch over a few months rather than just one month. Lastly, I loved this post! I love the photograph of the mountain. I also love your Jars of Clay reference. It reminds me of when I met my husband almost 15 years ago.

I, too, have always loved the Fall and it seemed like everyone else loved Summer but more and more I am seeing that a huge percentage of people LOVE Fall and that is awesome - Just like your photography!!

I appreciate that you use the word "autumn". "Fall" is just not a grand enough word for this season.

Love Jars of Clay. :)

Me too.

Thanks for the mental imagery. It makes the anticipation all the better.

Gorgeous photo, Jason. I love seeing those bright spots of sunshine in the midst of cloud cover--the contrast is brilliant.

Autumn is my favorite time of year, too. Pumpkins, leaves, an end to mowing. Love it!

Jason, as himself said...

My sister had to evacuate due to this fire.

Fall in Utah is a dream. Winter in Utah is a nightmare!

I am so with you on the feeling of fall. It is my favorite season too. For all the same reasons :)
