Moments with Joey – Favorites

SCENE 1, INTERIOR. MORNING, CLASSROOM. The teacher is walking back into the classroom from making copies before school starts. A lone boy is sitting at the back table with his Math book cracked open. He is working on an assignment as the teacher moves to the table.

TEACHER: Hey, how’s my favorite Joey in the whole, wide classroom?

[The boy looks around the room, noticing that he is the only kid currently present].

JOEY: Mr. Z, I’m the only Joey in the room…in fact, I’m the only kid here.

TEACHER: Ah…[The teacher puts on a knowing look]. But that does not negate the fact that you’re my favorite Joey…

[The boy lets this sink in for a moment; after a few seconds he looks up at the teacher].

JOEY: Mr. Z, what if I were the only kid to show up for the day? Wouldn’t that be cool?

TEACHER: Yeah, it would. We’d have to go on a field trip…maybe to go see a movie or something. Maybe the newest Harry Potter.

JOEY: I’ve already seen it.

TEACHER: Well, maybe that new Narnia movie, then.

JOEY: I’ve already seen that one, too.

TEACHER: Then maybe we’d just have to stay in the classroom and do homework all day.

JOEY: With you? Just you and me? THAT would be so awesome…

[There is a pause as the teacher and boy both continue to work on their individual projects].

JOEY: Mr. Z?

TEACHER: What?

JOEY: Thanks for letting me be your favorite Joey in the whole, wide classroom.

TEACHER: You betcha...after all - you could have been my second favorite Joey.

[Pause].

JOEY: Yeah, and you’re pretty nice like that.

TEACHER: Somebody’s gotta do it...it might as well be me.

[Fade to black].

That makes me thankful.

Cute. If one of my students does something extra amazing I tell them that they are my new favorite. All of the kids love to hear when they are my new favorite. Secretly, all of my kids are my favorite. haha

So stinkin' cute! I once had a student draw me a picture and write, "You are the best teacher in the classroom". Hmmm, wait a minute!

Stopping by from The Jason Show! Loving perusing your blog.

Smart kid! You are putting a permanent positive hand print on his life, and that is so incredible. From someone who still remembers those few amazing teachers who did the same for her. :)

Also, I have to say thank you for all of the super nice comments on my blog this week! I am humbled and grateful, it means a lot to me. Not to mention, being complimented never hurts! :)

I'm sure Joey needed to hear that since he was working on what I am assuming was homework that was due that day.

More teachers need to recognize their students..I remember when my oldest was in 3rd grade she asked me why her teacher didn't like her.. I asked her why she said that and she said " Mrs. B., likes Maria more than me, she always talks to her, and hugs her.", My daughter equated those actions as love.. That about broke my heart that a teacher tho, she may have favored Maria, did not realize eyes were watching her... I am not saying u favor Joey... I am saying that I wished my daughter had a teacher and could have experienced what Maria did.

I think it's awesome he'd rather sit in the classroom alone with you all day instead of go to a movie he's already seen.

Adorable story and just goes to show that what kids want more than new stuff and new experiences (movies, putt putt, etc.) is more time with adults they admire. Kudos to you!

I love it. When a kid likes hanging out with his teacher more than the thought of seeing a Harry Potter or Narnia movie, you've gotta be doing something right.

What a sweet post. Because EVERYONE wants to feel special...and maybe once, for only a minute, feel like YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE, the BEST.

I tell all my kids and my grandkids, they are my favorite....cause they are, each one.
Our egos really need to feel that we had ALL OF YOU.......if even for only a minute.

Wow. I didn't like any of my teachers nearly enough to WANT to stay in all day and do homework with them.

You know - this kid will remember these forever. Positive impressions that will make a difference in him.

Well done Mt Z

Man, that kid has seen a slew of movies. I can't believe he wouldn't want to see either of those AGAIN!

My kids probably wouldn't want to stay and do homework all day with me. Or would they? Yeah, probably not.

With two boys, I use the, "You are my favorite (insert name here)" trick all the time.

Because it's awesome.

And it makes my kids feel like the special-ist kids in the world.

I'm sure Joey appreciated it.
