Weekly Kodachrome - Leading the Way

Last week my friend, John, took me to see Crystal Geyser in hopes that it would erupt. Unfortunately, it merely bubbled and churned – having no set schedule as to when it would discharge in its ostentatious majesty.

But we waited anyway.

As John, my new friend, Melinda, and two of John’s kids explored the travertine-deposited spillways from the geyser leading down to the Green River, the last rays of the scorching sun melted away behind the eastern mountains. The sunlight coated the landscape with its unearthly glimmer, and the yellow and orange layers of travertine glowed like a pumpkin on Halloween night. And as John’s son and I walked the watery-coated surfaces, I noticed how our shadows contrasted so deeply with that of the the iron carbonate. It was then that I took the lens cap off my camera, and snapped the Kodachrome of the Week.

Adventures & Misadventures of Daily Living

Did you take a photo in the past seven days that made you smile? Please feel free to include a link to the image in the comments section if you did.

Crystal Geyser in a nutshell: Back in 1935, a group was drilling to locate oil and accidentally discovered – and unleashed – a pocket of water and gasses from underneath the earth’s surface; the gasses have been escaping ever since and pushing up massive amounts of cold water from the ground, sometimes shooting water as high as 100 feet in the air. Yes, the area has a sulphuric odor about it, but in the right light, and at the right time - with a crosswind - it is nothing short of magnificent.

Fantastic shot!

All I have taken this week is pics of naked corgis.

I need to grab that camera more often.

Love this picture! For some reason I really like silhouettes and how much they portray without a face or an expression.

I've never seen a geyser in my life.

I love the color contrast in that photo. It's perfect.

I love the picture of the shadows! I'm going to have to try that sometime.

Loving the new header. Very Wild Thingish.

Awesome picture! Actually I've taken 764 pictures in the past week, but who's counting? :) I've gotten it down to 60 or 70 though, which should earn me some great prize, I think. A few are on the blog now, more coming. I love them all because they are my family, but there are two or three truly great ones in there. They should all be up in the next few days.

It's so rude when geysers won't erupt on command.

Great picture. Every time I see your photos I resolve to never take another picture again. You have such a good eye!

Beautiful photo! I think of the scripture, "And a little child shall lead them" as I see the smaller shadow in front.
I've never heard of Crystal Geyser! Sounds like an awesome place!
(I was kinda hoping to see a picture of your new friend, Melinda)

I seriously love this for so many reasons. But mainly because I know the guide, mentor, teacher, and man behind the shadow. Beautiful pic of what looks to be an amazing place.

J - You threw me with the 'title' of your post. Then I laughed. Thanks for sharing your shots this week!

S - I love them too. Silhouettes are amazing. I can't wait to see what photos you drum up in the coming week.

K - When I saw our shadows against the yellow and orange rock, I saw a photo that was begging to be taken.

Y - You should...I expect to see some shots soon, girl! Thanks for the header compliment. I just thought it was time for a change and I really liked this particular photo.

L - Gotta love the mouse! Thank for linking up!

M - It was great to finally meet you after hearing so much about you from John. I am amazed at just how much you eluded the camera though...

H - I LOVE your shot! The perspective is amazing...Thanks for the backlink, girl!

L - You are a photo-taking maniac, aren't you? Wait, I already know the answer to that question...I'm going to head over soon and check them out.

M - Amen to that, sister! And you know what, I only show you the good shots, I didn't show you the one that looked awful. A friend of mine recommended doing a post of just crummy shots...yeah, probably not.

C - I just met her down in Green River...she has this ability to 'disappear' when a camera is pulled out. Pretty uncanny, really.

N - I love this photo, too, even though it makes me look like I'm wearing a hat - which I'm not. But thanks, Nat...this was a fun trip and the lighting at this particular time was perfect.

It's that darn invisibility cloak... I always forget I have it on... LOL....

Loved the post. That picture turned out so well. The lighting almost makes it look like the rocks are on fire, doesn't it? You got some mad camera skills, dude... :-)

Excellent shot indeed.

I haven't been to that place since I was a kid. Need to get back there sometime with my boys.

Never heard of this place but based on the shot, it is stunningly gorgeous there!

your photography always amazes me... I'm afraid the only things I've photographed this week are cupcakes and a big empty building... (not even kidding)

and now I need to add Crystal Geyser to my "must visit" places... but hope for more fortuitous timing!
