Weekly Kodachrome - Autumn's Fireworks

I thought about corn today—hot, buttered corn—fresh on the cob. It practically made my mouth water in anticipation.

Husking—oh, how I love that word.

It also made me think of autumn. That canonical closing of the year when the air grows chill, the days begin to grow shorter, and the trees take on the fireworkian hues of amber and gold displays for days—or even weeks on end —before becoming stark and bare, their skeletal arms then reaching toward ashen skies, and the wintery desolation which awaits in the wings and slowing of life before the winds bring with them the blusterings of white.

…the proverbial closing of the year.

But for now, orange crème pumpkins sit in the fields, waiting to be gathered in before the frost. Gardens are burgeoning with their bounty—zucchini will be left on doorsteps, and piles of leaves anticipate their moments to be raked together and leapt in, children swimming in their sea of multicolored wonder.

“Autumn is where my heart belongs, where it can be tempered by the early snows of winter and bound to the beauty of fallen, dead leaves. The air has a bite and the wind a fierce howl, driving you to the comforts that are so often left by the wayside: the hot cups of coffee, tea, and cider, the warm bowls of oats, and the sublime feeling of being wrapped in a blanket in front of a roaring fire, a book firmly grasped in hand. Yes, this is the season for me, where my soul is content, where I belong.”

I'm pretty sure I've said this before: "The way you write is just as beautiful as the photos you take." Always such a treat to visit here.

That corn sounds very delicious. The photo very clears shows autumn, my autumn already has bare trees, blustery wind and gray overcast days. I don't know if I'm ready for this!

That is gorgeous. I was just at my brother Justin's house for a quick little trip, and saw one of your photos hanging on his wall. I couldn't believe how great it looked. Now I think I'll be needing one for myself (or one to replace his once I steal it).

I love you blog! You have wonderful photos, a great writing style and love you sense of humour!

I taught fourth grade in Australia for three years before moving on in other directions. In some ways I'm still teaching fourth. We homeschool and our 6th child is currently in fourth grade....two younger children yet to get there!

Wow, what an amazing shot. Those colors, I don't think I've seen anything quite like it. Unfortunately, I've always lived where Autumn and it's beautiful colors just aren't prevalent. Thank you so much for sharing such a wonderful piece.

Wow...what an incredible photo. I have never seen the ferns like that before with such majestic color!!! I true work of art.
I'd love to visit the east coast in the Fall, Boston perhaps, New England....and see all the huge trees in the fall.
We get yellow and some orange around here, but not the deep reds.
I love everything about fall
(well....except for one itty bitty problem....it is the introduction to winter)
and corn on the cob !!!!!! with the butter driping down my arms and pepper getting caught in my teeth
AWESOME

I think that Autumn's fireworks are as awe inspiring as July's.

Phenomenal shot and words to go with it.

Looks like you're a smidge bit ahead of us, but we did have our first frost last night, leaving behind beautiful little diamonds everywhere you looked.

This is my first time participating in your Weekly Kodachrome. Thanks for the opportunity. Happy (almost) weekend!---Kate

You took this photo? It so beautiful, it doesn't seem real! Has Microsoft bought it from you yet? It looks like it should be one of the new desktop wallpaper choices in the next version of Windows.
