I went to Macey’s Grocery Store the other day. Two of the employees were having a friendly debate about Dumbledore and Voldemort—oh, I mean You-Know-Who. I lingered in the aisle for a minute or two, listening to their discussion.
As I perused the brands of orange juice, I was reminded of the days when Harry Potter books entirely captivated the world, complete strangers in subways and parks began speaking to each other when each new book was released. People were engaged in conversations about where they were in the story. People were excitedly saying, “I haven’t read that part yet…don’t tell me!” and would eagerly recommence reading.
I can remember my brother and I sitting in our apartment back in our college days, each reading a different Harry Potter book. I recall when one of us would make a shocked or surprised noise that would commence in a flurry of discussion and excitement.
I was brought back to the juice aisle at Macey’s. I listened to the conversation for a moment or two longer before making my way to the register.
Harry Potter makes me smile.
Oh, and I did post over at 4p today.

U are a young one... reading HP in college!.. ok, u made me feel old.. I loved the first HP, tho it made me sad because of the way HP was treated
Go Merlin team! ;)
Oh no, Anony! We are not doing that whole Merlin vs Dumbledore thing again! But if we are- GO TEAM DUMBLEDORE! :)
Harry Potter makes me smile too. Well, really, right now he is making me bite my fingernails (Seriously, I have only nubs left!)since I am still working my way through "The Half Blood Prince". I'm almost to the end and all I want to do is READ! I am pushing myself out of the house today to get some things done and away from the book. But I have considered taking it with me to read at stop lights...
Yes, Harry Potter makes me smile too- big time!
HP has brought back my son recently - rescued him from the depths of uber cool high school-dom (or dumb) - and (get this) he actually invited me to go to the midnight showing with him and his friends...
for that alone HP makes me smile.
oh, and of COURSE I was an obsessive HP reader - dying for book 3, book 4, book 5, etc... as they all came out!
Loved HP until about the 4th one and then he lost me.
But again, I thank you for shopping at your local Macey's. : )
Glad to see that I'm not the only one you made feel old! I was already a seasoned teacher when those books came out. I remember a teacher was using one as the novel of the month and two parents in her classroom complained to 'higher ups' They felt the books were promoting witchcraft and unchristan thoughts. Thing was, the supertendent at the time was Jewish and he didn't like them bringing up the C word, so nothing happen.
My son really liked reading HP books when he was in elementary school. After the 4th, he lost interest.
Enter Twilight books. My son didn't read those, but they were discussed by others the same way HP was.
Perhaps the next group of books that everyone will be talking about is:
"Moments with Joey!"
Would you believe that I've never read HP? Me...a former English teacher! I'm so embarrassed.
I do have the set, and have actually commenced reading the first installment. Autumn is working on #2. My goal this year is to read much more young adult literature...it's nice to find a literate connection with my sixth grader these days.
When I first read through this, I had thought the title said "...and Connections With Otters." I feel so disappointed now.
You will be horrified to know that I haven't read them. I know. Embarrassing. Since I've been going to school I haven't read anything for leisure, simply because my mind is too tired. Maybe when I finish school and retire I'll get a chance. That will be within a week of each other when I'm 70 at the rate I'm going.
I am so behind the times. I finished the first book and had to wait so long for the second one (from the library) that I've started multiple books since. I need to just buckle down and do it.
Here here. I miss those days. I read the first tow books to the kids in the after school program at SSV. Has it been that long?
I was just talking with my dentist about this today (when I could get a word in without any tools in my mouth). Harry really does bring people together.
Those of you who haven't read them…do so. That way, you'll be able to connect with the rest of the world in a chain of Harry Potterish love.
It's all about world happiness.
Miya - Sorry about not talking about otters. I was originally going to talk about that, but then changed my mind at the last second. Curse me…
Anonymous - Merlin had a team?
For those of you who don't know what that's all about: http://teachinfourth.blogspot.com/2009/11/settling-scores.html
I think the fever will be renewed with the new movie soon.
I never got into Harry Potter. I was more of a Lord of the Rings type nerd. Although, I have seen all the Potter movies, so maybe that just makes me lazy.
Yes, Merlin has a team. And it rocks man! Like, totally!
@Cheeseboy: the beauty of HP is that they're a fast read and easy to pick up and get into even if u put it down for a few days...
Harry Potter rules!!
I started reading Harry Potter when the 4th book was out. I didn't know what the hype was and once I read it I was ALL OVER IT! :o) You should have seen my sister & I on the day the last book came out...we were at a family reunion in Salmon ID and we drove into town to get the book...spend WAY too much money $25 on it, but worth it! :o) I think they are taking WAY TO LONG on getting the movies done with though...when it overlaps another great book (Twilight) that people are reading & they are done reading the Harry Potter series it makes it annoying...
I have been listening to your music for the evening :o) I like the selection!
I never got into Harry Potter - does that mean you are going to break up with me?
Glad you like the tunes, bird…
Tib - It might mean just that...
