SCENE 1, INTERIOR. NOON, LUNCHROOM. The teacher has just finished his lunch. He rises from the table of fifth graders and begins to walk back toward the classroom. As he walks down the hallway, a boy materializes at his side. For a second, neither of them speak.
JOEY: Mr. Z, what are you thinking about?
TEACHER: [The teacher looks at the boy with a shrug]. I don’t know, why?
[The boy lays a hand on the teacher’s arm].
JOEY: Think hard about that, Mr. Z.
TEACHER: About what?
[The boy rolls his eyes].
JOEY: Keep thinking hard about that…keep thinking…Mr. Z? Are you still thinking? Keep thinking about that. Thinking, thinking, always thinking. Keep on thinking about that…
TEACHER: Do you know what, Joey? It just so happens that I AM thinking about something…like putting you into a wooden box, nailing it shut, and dropping it in the middle of the lake.
[The boy stops in his tracks for a second and then falls back in step with his teacher].
JOEY: Stop thinking…stop thinking…don’t think too hard about that…
[Fade to black].
