Moments with Joey – The Song

SCENE 1, INTERIOR. AFTERNOON, CLASSROOM. Several students are working on their homework assignment for Math. The teacher is moving about the room answering questions. He approaches a young boy with his hand in the air.

JOEY: Mr. Z? Can I read for a while?

TEACHER: Is your homework done?

JOEY: Yep.

TEACHER: Did you do it correctly?

JOEY: Pretty much.

[The boy takes his assignment out and shows it to his teacher. For the most part, it has been done correctly].

TEACHER: I don’t know, Joey…

JOEY: What if I wrote you a song? Could I read then?

TEACHER: Write me a song?

JOEY: Okay, I’ll write you a song...

[The boy bursts into lyrics].

JOEY: ♪ Oh, Mr. Z…you’re wearing a brown shirt today…♫♪

[The teacher’s eyebrows go up just a little as the boy continues to caterwaul his homespun lyrics with a breaking voice. Several members of the class stop working to listen].

JOEY: ♪ …and it’s awesome. ♫ You have dark, spiky hair which is poky if you touch it… ♪

TEACHER: Okay, Joey, just stop right now, okay? I can only imagine what Simon Cowell would say to that.

[The teacher mimics a British accent].

TEACHER: That was, by far, the oddest thing I’ve ever heard. It was like a cross between a dying elephant and somebody swinging a cat around by its tail and hitting it on a pole.

[The boy’s eyes begin to sparkle as he grins].

JOEY: ♫ And you’re awesome and you’re fun-n-ney, too…♪

[The teacher masks a smile].

JOEY: So, now can I read, Mr. Z?

TEACHER: Yeah, you can read…

[Fade to black].

I think your Joey posts - and the fact that I somewhat suspect that you are getting 1/2 these stories from my 5th grade son - are responsible for the fact that I can still laugh at the odd things my son does... songs included. Yesterday's was about Santa and all of the things that he didn't think the rest of the kids deserved.

How could you say no when a song is written for YOU! I think Joey might go into politics or PR one day.

So not a stupid child.... I remember a "Simpson's" episode years ago where Bart wants something from his dad so he says, "Can I Can I Can I Can I Can I Can I Can I Can I Can I Can I Can I Can I Can I Can I Can I Can I Can I Can I Can I Can I......"? Until his dad was so annoyed he let him......... caterwauling will do the same thing. I know.... personally. ;)

I'm sure Joey loved the visual of a cat being swung by it's tail and hitting in to a pole!
Joey's one awesome kid!

Funny. I never pictured Joey as one that actually asks to read. I underestimated him.

His song sounds a lot better than the one I just sang.

I think there should be more impromptu made-up singing in the world.

This comment is totally unrelated to this post. I simply wanted to inform you of a discovery I made while shopping at Target yesterday. In the Christmas candy section, they have Reese's Peanut Butter Cups the size of your face. Check it out! (If your Target doesn't carry them, let me know. I'd be happy to send some up.) :)

Ahh...the young man asking to read. It warms my heart. My boys? All draw monster trucks.

Oh, Joey makes me laugh! Just wondering...how many times has he touched your hair? Or is it just a guess that it's poky?

"It was like a cross between a dying elephant and somebody swinging a cat around by its tail and hitting it on a pole"...I was drinking coffee when I read that!

A kid who ASKS if he can read? AND busts out into song? The world needs more Joey's.

Nex time, I dare you to joing him in singing.
