We have people who make our lives far more surreal; these are the individuals who—when they knock on our door—that we don’t even pretend that we aren’t home. We open the door…every. single. time they knock.
I had just moved into my townhouse back 2007 and I only knew a few of my neighbors—three to be exact. I remember walking out to get the mail one night and thinking to myself, “Teachinfourth, you don’t know hardly anyone around here.” I decided then and there that the next person I saw, I’d introduce myself and make them my friend.
I met Marc.
He was heading out to his car to get something, and on my way back to my house we struck up a conversation; that was the day we became friends. I’m happy to say that Marc and I have been friends for somewhere in the vicinity of four years.
One day—not long ago—Marc and I were talking about how we didn’t know hardly anyone who lived around us; well, we decided to do something about it. We decided that we would host a block party, a Festivus for the rest of us. Fittingly, we’d christen it, “The Summer of George” and invite all of our neighbors (as well as bloggers who felt like coming).
I can’t tell you the feeling of awesomeness I had whenever someone approached out little gala and I was able to cry out—with hands in the air mind you, “The Summer of George!”
When our little afternoon celebration concluded, the world wasn’t changed, and we didn’t get to know all of our neighbors, but we did get to meet a few…and a blogger or two to boot.
Here’s to The Summer of George. Here’s to taking the time to taste the fruits, and letting the juices drip down our chins…
Did you take a photo in the past seven days that made you smile? If so, feel free to include a link to the image in the linky. (If you try to crop your photo with the linky, it won’t always show up, you might just want to let the program self-crop it).

Long live the Summer of George!
Sorry I missed the Summer of George. I was too busy experiencing the Fall of Rachel......
Everything comes back to a Seinfeld episode! LOL We've actually celebrated Festivus for a few years with some friends of ours. LOL Even had feats of strength! We're so silly!
I love the block party idea! I have SUCH a hard time meeting new people. I always think they won't like me, so I don't like to put myself out there. Kind of weird for a photographer huh? LOL
Wish I could have made it!
If it's any consolation, I missed it cause I was enjoying a free trip to Lagoon! ;P
Banner and everything, that's awsome!
I'm so glad you had a great time!
And that banner is fantastic!
What a fun idea. I'd love to know more. What does one eat during a Summer of George party? Are there games? Or do you just sit around and make snide remarks?
Love the banner and Love the idea! Way to go out and meet people :-)
I have a feeling it was epic.
I'm surprised I haven't seen other posts about this magnificent event. I'm sure it was fun!
That sounds like SO MUCH FUN! Did I ever tell you that you are the coolest guy I know? 'Cause you totally are!
Glad it was fun!
However - I think George needs to travel south next fall... I'm sure there are oodles of Festivus participant wannabes just waiting in the wings...or the weeds... :-) LOL
Tried to grab the code for the linky for my blog, but it just took me to the linky homepage... :( Maybe I did something wrong....
H - Thanks for coming, it was great to meet you!
R - Sometimes we need to be where we need to be.
D - I think that everything can be related back to Seinfeld because there is so much in that show. As for having a hard time putting yourself out there, that can happen sometimes for everyone.
H - Free stuff is always good, no worries.
Y - That was Marc's idea so we designed it and had it printed up...I love it.
K - Who doesn't love George? The banner is what made people love it all the more.
M - We thought about having an 'airing of grievances' but changed out minds. No games this time, maybe next though.
C - I'm glad we did it. If we did it again, I'm sure we'd meet far more people...you know, word of mouth and all that.
T - We played "Friday" by Rebecca Black and "Baby" By Justin Bieber...Friday, Baby...need I say more?
C - There was one or two.
R - I'm just glad that people came. Kind of terrible to throw a shin-dig and have nobody there...
M - Thanks for letting me know about the issues. I've since fixed the code, it can be grabbed now. If there were a SoG party in GR, I'd make the journey...
Love your pose in front of the sign!
Super fun idea....
not knowing neighbors and deciding to do something about it, is where it's at! way to go!
I love summer of George and I am a big fan of Festivus as well (gotta pole to prove it).
The banner rocks!
You rock. That's all there is to it. Plain and simple.
Wish I could have made it. Next year!
If you live closer and if you had invited us, we would SO be there. Our friends would SO be there... and loved it, I'm sure. In fact, we could lend you our version of George (although skinnier), but just as funny and looks like George's long-lost cousin.
Great idea
and GREAT title for your partay
here's to more juices running down your chin
Hmmmm..... an SoG party in GR... definitely something to think about... (teehee)
Might have to talk to the H's and pursue it... then the southern and central folks would have a place to congregate...
(Of course it's ALWAYS a party here...that goes without saying :-) Ha! Ha! )
Hi! I decided to link up because this picture definitely makes me smile. Nothing artistic about it, just a snapshot, but it was an exciting occasion for us.
