There are small towns.
These are those places you see on the side of the highway as you drive, those small municipalities you usually swing off at just long enough to fill the tank, get yourself a Dr. Pepper, and use the facilities before you jump back on those shimmering lanes of asphalt to head back to the destination you originally had in mind.
It makes me think of Pixar’s movie, Cars, and an interaction between Lightning McQueen and Sally as they looked out over the valley of Radiator Springs from high up on the sandstone cliffs.
Sally: I fell in love with this…
Lightning: [Looking at the cars on the distant interstate]. They’re driving right by, they don’t even know what they’re missing.
Sally: Forty years ago, that interstate down there didn’t exist.
Lightning: Really?
Sally: Yeah. Back then, cars came across the country a whole different way.
Lightning: How do you mean?
Sally: Well, the road didn't cut through the land like that interstate. It moved with the land, it rose, it fell, it curved. Cars didn’t drive on it to make great time. They drove on it to have a great time.
I stopped. I stayed. I had a wonderful time. I’ll post more later this week.

We always take the backroads and two lane highways when we can. You miss so much when you travel the major highways. We also intentionally visit small towns, their museums, festivals, and local diners. It is a lot of fun, so enjoyable! We've met some really colorful people that way too! Glad you had a good time.

Is it only me that thinks Sally was a bit easy in that film? threw herself at the famous racing car. sad

I love everything about this.. the photo, the angle and composition! what you wrote! we did parts of route 66 but I didn't have a camera at that time and this kind of shot makes me wish I did!

Loved this, Jason--really made me reflect. I have a gps now, and I find myself playing "beat the clock" most of the time when I get on the road to travel somewhere. I'll start out with a stated end time, and it becomes my goal to see how many minutes I can shave off of that time--how much I can abbreviate the time spent in the car. I used to love road trips, and I think I've become a victim of the interstate--the push and shove, the subtle little road rages. What a beautiful photograph and calming little reflection to think upon. Thanks.

You know I wish my kids were able to see the landscape that I grew up around - now a motorway exists there. The trees I climbed, the hunts we built, the fairy lane with all the wild primroses all gone plus our home and garden - all bulldozed away to make way for that big road.

This post definitely made me miss my own little small town of Fairview, UT. Good thing I'm headed there this weekend so I can get my small town fix! I'm definitely not a city girl and your pictures and quotes were PERFECTION! :)
