Media of the Week - Move Along

Pin It There are moments in life when I need a lift.

I feel that I just can’t go forward another step.

To get up in the morning is a struggle.

I lie in bed and wonder what the day has in store for me.

I shudder.

I close my eyes and wonder if I can make it through another day.

I hit the snooze button two or three times and stare at the ceiling, waiting for it to go off the next time, being the final indicator for me to get up.

We all experience days like this from time to time. I figure that none of us has the perfect life where we leap from our beds and embrace each and every day like it were our last and live it to the fullest.

Maybe I’m wrong—perhaps you do. Maybe you are greeted by herds of unicorns dancing on your lawn each and every morning that shoot rainbow wishes from their eyes that you capture in Mason jars and conceal away in the attic for rainy days.

I don’t.

But would I love to have them...

Sometimes I don’t turn on the lights in the bathroom in the mornings. I like to believe that when I climb in the shower that it’s really raining outside, and that I’m really standing in the deluge. I feel a sense of control and power in knowing that I can change the temperature and intensity at will.

I will often fumble for my iPod on these mornings.

I keep a playlist in my arsenal; I call it, “Feel Good Music.”

It’s just that—music that makes me feel good. When the sounds embedded in that playlist tears through the speakers and rip through the fabric of morning air, I feel the world around me change—or maybe it’s simply my perception of it. The world becomes a beautiful place.

I smile at the day when I walk out of my house and breathe in the fresh morning air. I find myself in awe of the clouds hovering around Timpanogos, capturing the first rays of morning light.

The world is an adventure waiting to be had—a conquest anticipating its time.

To this playlist I add yet another song which helps me to change my attitude. Though a few years old, it is a good one nonetheless. Plus, the video’s editing is nothing short of pure, unadulterated geniusness.

If you’d like to add a song that builds you up and inspires you to the playlist we started together about nine months ago, feel free to let me know and—if it’s available—I’ll add it in.

Because—after all—we each need our own form of unicorn wishes.

Oh, and don't forget that Saturday (tomorrow) is Festivus. Hope to see you there.

That song was the anthem of my 18th year, and I still love it now as much as I did then. :) My feel good anytime music is anything by an awesome band called Mae. The entire Destination: Beautiful album is a favorite. :)

I'm gonna be honest...when I saw the title of this post I heard it in Obi-Wan's voice. (Geesh, I'm such a nerd! ;)

I think it's safe to say that we do all have those days...even when we have overcome great obstacles to be happy, those days still come, and will always show up occasionally. That seems to be life!

I too, love the way music can help us through those hard times. One of my faves is this one: http://pl.st/s/816041489

You are doing great! Take care, teach! :)

My unicorn is getting on my nerves. I'll let you borrow him for awhile.

I'm new to your blog, so I think this playlist idea is smokin'. Do you have Joshua Radin's "Brand New Day" on the list yet? It's a killer tune!

My boy students love when I play "Kryptonite" by 3 doors down.

I have always been a firm believer in the power of music and words.

I've been listening to Mo Tab's latest album, "This Is The Christ" this week. There's a reason it hit number one on the charts. It's lifted my spirits all week.

Everyday by Dave Matthews Band - amazing video and uplifting song. This is my boost song when I run - I hit 3 miles and that song comes one and I am golden.

Oh yeah - and in our house the unicorns don't shoot rainbows out of their eyes, they shoot them out of their butts.

Just think of the mess you'd have to clean up if you DID have unicorns on your lawn every day.

New Day for You by Basia. And I think I just as glad the unicorns don't show up in my lawn - have you seen what they leave behind besides rainbows?

I had to come back because it occurred to me that I probably haven't preached the word of Paramore to you yet. If I could only ever listen to one band again, they'd be it.

Song List for the purposes of this post (in no particular order after My Heart): My Heart, Careful, Whoa, Hallelujah, Born For This, Brick by Boring Brick. But really, there is no particular song that isn't great.

Great song! Love the video - my favorite part is the hands catching him at the end. It made me want to whip my hair back and forth.

Pretty much anything by Toad the Wet Sprocket puts a smile on my face, especially when it's unexpected!

Your blog is exactly what I needed today. Sometimes I wonder if I am the only one that has days like this & how hard the fight can be to keep taking those steps. Thank you so much!

You're right we all have those days. I think even with a yard-full of unicorns, I'd wanna slap 'em one day if I were to get up in one of "my moods".

We've been listening to a lot of 80s music lately and Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves always makes me want to sing along.

Great song choices, guys...I'll add them into the playlist later this week! Keep them coming...

You know, I've always liked this song, but I had never seen the video. Somehow, watching the video makes me appreciate the song even more.

Thanks for this post. It was something I needed. :)

Even though this song isn't really in the same genre as most of the songs on that totally awesome playlist, I have found that Hidden Away by Josh Groban always gives me a lift. Also, whenever I want to really just laugh it up, sing along, and let loose, I love What's Goin On by the Four Non Blondes. And pretty much all of The Beatles early stuff. :) Although you can't really put all of those songs on your playlist. You could try When I'm 64, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, and Till There Was You.

Ok...I could go on and on. I'll just stop now. I haven't even begun to scratch the surface!
