Moments with Joey – Parenting

SCENE 1, INTERIOR. MORNING, CLASSROOM. The teacher is walking to the back of the classroom before school starts. A boy is working on old assignments and suddenly leaves his desk. He walks up to his teacher holding his Weekly Evaluation.

JOEY: Mr. Z, could you sign my Weekly Evaluation?

[The teacher points to the space for the signature at the bottom of the form].

TEACHER: Sorry…what does it say right here?

JOEY: It says ‘parent signature.’

TEACHER: Yes it does. Sorry, Joey, but I’m not your parent.

[The boy stands for a second with a somewhat forlorn look on his face].

JOEY: Yeah, but Mr. Z, here at school you’re the closest thing I’ve got to a parent.

[The teacher smiles and shakes his head].

TEACHER: Is it because I make you do homework, or because you don't always listen to me?

JOEY: A little bit of both...

TEACHER: Sorry, Joey. I still can’t help you with that…tell you what, just get your parents to sign it tonight and turn it in tomorrow, okay? It won’t be late…

JOEY: Thanks, Mr. Z. [The boy hugs his teacher and smiles up at him]. I just wanted you to have this…

[Fade to black].

"The closest thing to a parent at school", that's awesome. So, what is it about 5th grade boys. I pull a few 5th graders for speech. They act like they're put out when I go get them, but they're fine during therapy. Every time I see them in the hall, they give a little wave. I'm glad they're not junior high kids.

Everyone should get at least one hug a day. In my opinion.... More, if possible.

Awwww...I need my own Joey. Oh wait. I've got 4. But today they have not been that sweet, so maybe we could trade with you being a parent now and all.

1. You DO realize the power you have a teacher yes? I remember that I had a teacher that really was my best friend in a very dark period of my life.

2. Please tell me that Joey has some good parents. Please.....otherwise, my heart will start breaking

Hugs from well meaning students are the best! Also this post goes to show, you do have a soft heart, giving him an extra day without any consequences ;o)

I think that is so great that he thinks of you as a parent.

Sometimes they just need a hug!
